President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed his commitment to commencing construction of an airport in Dhidhdhoo, North Thiladhunmathi, within the year.
Speaking to residents during a recent visit, the President stressed the importance of the project as part of broader regional development plans and highlighted his confidence in delivering on the promises made during his election campaign.
The President stated that the airport is integral to Dhidhdhoo’s growth and forms a key component of the Government’s long-term strategy for the four northernmost atolls, which are being developed as integrated development zones. He explained that similar efforts will be implemented in the southern atolls and that Dhidhdhoo’s airport would play a crucial role in executing this model in the north.
Assuring residents of swift progress, the President stated that he looks forward to arriving at Dhidhdhoo on the first flight to land at the new airport.
In addition to the airport project, the President announced a range of development initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life in Dhidhdhoo and surrounding areas.
These include resolving existing issues at the port with the completion of the ongoing port project, establishing a football ground, and advancing plans for the development of a swimming track and the harbour.
Healthcare services in Dhidhdhoo will also see significant improvements, with the Atoll Hospital set to receive new facilities. The President confirmed that a CT scan service would soon be introduced, along with speech therapy facilities, as part of efforts to enhance regional healthcare infrastructure.
Housing development was identified as a top priority, with MVR 1.5 billion allocated in the national budget to address housing needs across the country. The President revealed that tenders for the Dhidhdhoo housing project would be floated by the end of January, and 200 housing units would be constructed in the first phase. He expressed optimism about the progress and emphasised that the Government is committed to delivering on its housing promises.
Environmental concerns were also addressed, with the President announcing that waste management services would begin in all villages this year. WAMCO is set to commence operations in Dhidhdhoo as part of this initiative. Additionally, measures to resolve power supply issues and establish ice plants to support the fisheries sector are in the pipeline.
President Dr Muizzu stressed that these development efforts transcend political differences and are aimed at benefitting all citizens equally. He called for unity and cooperation to achieve progress, and spoke of the need to work together for the common good.
