The Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Mohamed Saeed, has stated that the Maldivian economy is recovering from previous challenges and progressing without accumulating additional debt, describing this as one of Government’s greatest achievements.
Speaking to local media, Minister Saeed noted that the Government inherited a difficult economic situation but has successfully put the country back on track. He emphasised that with economic stability restored, new development projects are being initiated, paving the way for further progress.
According to the Minister, both Maldivian and foreign businesses have regained confidence in the economy compared to the period before the current Administration took office.
He cited examples of key developments, including the launch of the air ambulance service and the commencement of wide-body aircraft operations, which have enabled direct tourist arrivals from China.
Looking ahead, the Government aims to expand tourism infrastructure in the northern atolls, with plans to increase the number of tourist beds in Haa Alif and Haa Dhaalu this year. Additionally, land reclamation work under the Maldives Economic Gateway project is scheduled to commence.
Minister Saeed described 2025 as a year of economic activity, with a combination of budgeted projects and off-budget initiatives driving growth across various industries.
