Maldives Immigration has announced a 45-day Special Visa programme for foreign Hafiz and Qaris to lead Taraweeh prayers during Ramadan 1406, with a February 16 deadline for mosque applications.

The Immigration Department will process applications through the IMUGA online portal within seven days of submission, requiring Ministry of Islamic Affairs approval. Prayer leaders will receive a daily allowance of MVR 200, with sponsors responsible for visa compliance and departure arrangements.

Family members of Hafiz and Qaris can obtain 30-day tourist visas upon arrival by submitting a Sponsorship Declaration, with extensions available if requested seven working days before expiry. Immigration authorities emphasise that all travellers must await visa approval before starting their journey.

Foreign residents in the Maldives may lead Taraweeh prayers only with valid work permits, Hafiz certification, and current employment at Quran centres or religious institutions.

The programme aims to facilitate the traditional practice of hosting foreign religious scholars during Ramadan to lead prayers in local mosques throughout the Maldives.
