President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has pledged to ensure that development in Haa Alif Molhadhoo is brought on par with islands with larger populations.
Addressing residents, he acknowledged the island’s small population of 412 but stressed that essential services and infrastructure would be delivered without compromise.
Among the issues highlighted was the delay in several development projects. The President noted that work on the island’s water and sewerage system, which began in 2021, had stalled. He critiqued the previous government for its inaction and assured residents that the current Administration had identified solutions to resume and expedite the project. Plans are also in place to extend the water supply to local tourism areas, with discussions underway to address electricity and sewerage needs.
Education was another priority, with the President emphasising the Government’s policy of ensuring quality education for all children, regardless of population size. He pledged to complete the construction of a new school building, which had also faced delays, and to enhance educational facilities on the island.
In the health sector, the President promised to allocate resources to improve services, address staff shortages, and upgrade healthcare infrastructure. He assured residents that these improvements would be factored into this year’s budget.
Waste management was also on the agenda. The President revealed that foreign funds had been allocated for waste management projects across 21 islands, including Molhadhoo, but had remained unutilised due to previous administrative delays. He confirmed that a modern waste disposal site would be established on the island as part of broader environmental efforts.
Recognising the importance of sports and recreation, the President announced plans to develop a fully equipped fitness and recreation centre, along with futsal and volleyball courts. He spoke of the role of sports in promoting public health and community engagement.
On the issue of housing, he noted that Molhadhoo is a land-rich island and assured cooperation with the local council to allocate land as required. He encouraged residents to take advantage of the Government’s free loan scheme for home construction.
Concluding his address, the President pledged his commitment to ensuring that the majority of Molhadhoo‘s development projects would be implemented within the year, promising swift action to deliver long-awaited improvements.
