During his official visit to the islands of North Thiladhunmathi, President Dr  Mohamed Muizzu spoke of his Government's commitment to restarting stalled projects that were left incomplete by the previous Administration.

The President spoke of the importance of completing development work that has been delayed across multiple sectors, particularly in islands such as Uligamu.

While interacting with residents, President Dr Muizzu pointed out the significant slowdowns in various infrastructure projects, including the construction of the football field in Uligamu.

The President criticised the previous government's approach, stating that the football field had been handed over to a group of contractors who did not meet the required standards for completion. He explained that the fragmentation of the project, with different contractors responsible for various aspects like turf, fencing, and lighting, had led to a failure to finish the work as planned.

The President revealed that his Government has developed a new policy to address these issues by consolidating project work under a single contractor.

The aim is to ensure that all components of projects, such as the football field, are completed in a coordinated manner.

The President also confirmed that the responsibility for completing the outstanding work on the football field will be handed over to a Government company already mobilised on the island for other projects.

As part of the broader strategy, the Government plans to allocate stalled projects to state-owned companies, such as the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC). These companies, which are already active in the region, will now be tasked with taking over unfinished projects and completing them efficiently. The President explained that this move is part of a broader effort to restart rural development and ensure that long-delayed projects in education, health, water, and sanitation are addressed promptly.

President Dr Muizzu stated that his Government is working to bring together projects that have been stalled due to fragmented management under a single company to facilitate quicker completion. He also indicated that efforts are underway to cancel existing contracts and reassign these projects to state-owned companies to accelerate the process.

In addition to the football field, President Dr Muizzu confirmed that other infrastructure projects in Uligamu, such as the port development and the island’s health centre, would also be prioritised. He assured residents that once the building space for the health centre is secured, work on the port would proceed, further contributing to the island's development.

A part of the President’s vision is to ensure that all islands benefit from new public spaces, including children’s parks and outdoor gyms. He explained that once the port is completed, designated areas for these facilities will be set up, in line with the Government’s policy to enhance the quality of life across all islands in the country.
