The Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has been officially dissolved and removed from the country’s list of political parties, according to the Elections Commission (EC).

The decision follows the completion of necessary formalities, marking the end of what was once the second-largest political party in the Maldives. The EC confirmed that PPM ceased to exist as a registered political party from today onwards, in line with Section 30(a)(2) of the Political Parties Act, 2013. The dissolution was initiated after the party's Senate resolved to disband the organisation on 2 December.

At the time of its dissolution, PPM had a membership of 34,698, as recorded in the EC’s political party registry. The removal of PPM follows a similar decision regarding the Maldives Reform Movement (MRM), which was also taken off the list due to failing to meet the legally required membership threshold.

With these changes, the Maldives now has nine officially registered political parties. The People's National Congress (PNC), currently the ruling party, has become the largest political organisation in the country, with 68,968 members.
