Maldives has strengthened its climate action capabilities through an energy data management training programme, equipping 24 professionals with crucial skills for accurate energy reporting and emissions tracking under the Paris Agreement.
The specialised training, funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and supported by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), focused on energy statistics, balance development, and emissions calculations essential for greenhouse gas inventory compilation.
Dr Muaviyath Mohamed, Minister of State for Climate Change, Environment, and Energy, emphasised the training's importance for effective policy development and mitigation monitoring during the opening ceremony.
Participants came from key organisations including the Climate Change Department, Energy Department, Utility Regulatory Authority, Housing Development Corporation, FENAKA Corporation, and Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC).
Experts from the Sri Lanka Energy Managers Association (SLEMA) and Epoch Associates Pvt Ltd led the programme, teaching data management, energy commodities classification, and reporting protocols.
The initiative, part of the Capacity Strengthening for Improved Transparency of Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Actions (CBIT Maldives) Project, aims to align the country's energy data management with the Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF) under the Paris Agreement.
Minister Muaviyath presented certificates at the closing ceremony, commending the collaborative efforts of all participating organisations.
