The Minister of Health, Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim, has stated that the Maldives Blood Society (MBS) has increased its blood supply by 33 per cent in 2024 compared to 2023.
Speaking at the launch of the 'Join the Heroes', a national blood donation campaign, Minister Nazim highlighted that 35 per cent of the blood collected by MBS comes from volunteer donors. He noted the Government's commitment to increasing this percentage through collaborative efforts across the country.
The Minister stated that the Government aims to provide equitable health services to all citizens without any form of discrimination. He pointed out that ensuring affordable healthcare access for everyone, without creating unnecessary financial burdens, remains a top priority.
To achieve this goal, the Government is focusing on strengthening sea and air ambulance services to improve emergency response capabilities. Minister Nazim also acknowledged President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's health policy, particularly the promise to enhance support for thalassemia patients.
He referenced the ongoing expansion of MBS services, the introduction of essential services for thalassemia patients that were previously unavailable, and efforts to improve access to safe blood supplies. The Minister underlined the importance of raising public awareness about blood donation and the need to establish a robust system to protect and manage blood donations effectively.
The Government has pledged to strengthen and develop blood banks nationwide, with initiatives already underway to establish blood banks in all regional hospitals. This effort aims to ensure that blood donated by volunteers is properly stored and safely delivered to those in need.
