Former Attorney General Uza Aishath Azima Shukoor has commended President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and the Maldives Police Service for allowing the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) to conclude their rally without interference.

In a post on her official X account, Uza Azima praised the President and the Police for upholding the constitutional rights of political opponents to freedom of peaceful assembly and expression, describing it as an exemplary act.

While the Constitution of the Maldives guarantees the right to peaceful assembly, political participation, and freedom of expression, these rights have been restricted or withheld by various governments over the past 16 years. In addition, administrations have also obstructed youth-led rallies against violence targeting children and women.
