The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Maldives has announced that all vessels operating in the South Ari Marine Protected Area (SAMPA) for diving and snorkelling activities are now required to register, in accordance with the management plan designed to safeguard the region’s unique marine ecosystem.
According to the management plan, all vessels entering SAMPA to conduct diving and snorkelling activities must complete the official registration process. This regulation aims to ensure that marine tourism and related activities are carried out responsibly, minimising environmental impact while supporting the long-term preservation of the area’s natural resources.
The EPA has set a three-month deadline for compliance, stating that all vessels operating within SAMPA for these purposes must be registered within this period from the date of publication of the management plan.
The vessel registration process will be facilitated through the OneGov platform, streamlining procedures for operators and enhancing the efficiency of marine activity management in the protected area.
SAMPA is renowned for its exceptional marine biodiversity, attracting visitors from around the world. A key highlight of the region is the year-round presence of whale sharks, alongside vibrant coral reefs and diverse marine life, including turtles, manta rays, and various shark species.
