The Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources has launched a special dive event aimed at setting a world record, with the first phase of the 'Across Maldives Dive' officially underway.

The event, organised by Ocean Six Fifty, is taking place in two phases, with the first phase inaugurated at Hulhumale’ Phase 2 beach.

Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, Ahmed Shiyam, inaugurated the event, expressing the Government's support for initiatives that showcase the country's marine resources. He highlighted that the use of new diving equipment in the event was an exciting development and reaffirmed the Government's commitment to supporting such efforts.

Minister Shiyam also noted that the event will contribute to the promotion and marketing of the Maldives as a key destination for those interested in its marine offerings, particularly in tourism sectors that are not yet widely known.

As part of the Government's ongoing efforts to enhance maritime safety, Minister Shiyam also mentioned that 80 sailors are expected to be trained this year under a new programme aimed at qualifying at least one crew member on every vessel as a "rescue diver." The programme will cover open water diving, advanced diving techniques, and first aid, with an emphasis on equipping sailors with the necessary skills to handle emergencies at sea or during diving activities.

The first phase of the 'Across Maldives Dive' event, which is set to be held in two stages, will begin with a dive from Male’ to Hulhumale’, spanning approximately 70 kilometres. The second phase of the event, slated for next year, will cover a remarkable 4,600 kilometres from Haa Alif Thuraakunu to Addu City, making it the longest dive in the world.
