First Lady Sajidha Mohamed has launched the Happiness Index, a pioneering initiative aimed at measuring the well-being of Maldivians.

The project, introduced by the Ministry of Cities, Local Government, and Public Works, seeks to establish a formal framework to assess happiness levels across the country.

At the launch event, the First Lady underscored the idea that genuine happiness is rooted in spiritual harmony and mental well-being. She highlighted that happiness is an intrinsic part of every individual, and even during difficult times, people have a natural resilience that helps them return to a state of joy.

She also stressed the significance of spiritual prosperity, pointing out that Islamic teachings in the Holy Quran guide believers toward peace and contentment through the remembrance of Allah and embracing both life's blessings and challenges. According to her, maintaining a strong connection with the Creator and upholding human values are fundamental to achieving spiritual well-being.

The event featured the unveiling of the official Happiness Index logo by the First Lady. The Islamic University of Maldives (IUM) has been appointed as the research partner for this project, marking the first time a formal effort has been made to evaluate the nation’s happiness rate. The initiative is designed in line with internationally recognised best practices to ensure a comprehensive and accurate assessment.

During the ceremony, members from various sectors of society, including senior citizens, students, widows, differently-abled individuals, and youth, shared their interpretations of happiness. A special song created for the Happiness Index was also performed, adding a cultural touch to the event.

The development of the Happiness Index was initiated by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's Administration within the first year of his presidential term.
