The Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure has announced the successful completion of the Lamu Gan water supply project, a significant initiative aimed at improving water and sanitation facilities in rural areas of the Maldives.

Launched in 2021, the project sought to enhance access to clean water across the country. The construction of the Gan water supply system commenced in 2023, culminating in the establishment of two reverse osmosis (RO) plants, each with a capacity of 250 tonnes.

Additionally, two storage tanks capable of holding 1,080 tonnes of drinking water, along with two smaller tanks with a capacity of 720 tonnes, have been installed.

In an effort to further bolster water resources, a 60-tonne rainwater harvesting facility has been constructed in Gan, complemented by a dedicated storage tank with a capacity of 900 tonnes.

To ensure a sustainable energy supply for the plants, a 25 kW solar power system has also been integrated into the project.

The water project, funded through a credit facility provided by Exim Bank of India, has now been fully completed. It was officially handed over to the Government of Maldives by India in August and is currently operational under the supplier defects liability period.
