On the occasion of World Cancer Day, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has called on the public to refrain from smoking, emphasising its harmful effects and strong link to cancer.

Since taking office, President Dr Muizzu’s Administration has implemented several measures to reduce tobacco use in the country. Among the most significant steps is the ban on vape products, which were widely used among young people. The Government has now prohibited the import, sale, and use of vapes, citing health concerns and the need to prevent nicotine addiction.

In addition to the vape ban, the Government has introduced higher excise duties on tobacco products to make them less accessible and discourage consumption.

Another major policy change is the increase in the legal age for purchasing tobacco products. Previously, individuals aged 18 and above could buy tobacco products, but under the new regulation, only those over 21 years old are permitted to do so.

Marking World Cancer Day, President Muizzu addressed the issue on X , stressing that smoking remains a leading cause of cancer. He urged citizens to take this opportunity to commit to quitting the habit.

The President emphasised that through collective efforts and shared responsibilities, the Government's goal is to ensure that everyone has fair and equitable access to quality healthcare.
