The Ministry of Tourism and Environment has organised a workshop to present the country's third Climate Action Plan, aligning with commitments under the Paris Agreement of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
As part of this agreement, participating nations are required to submit an updated climate action plan every five years.
During the workshop, new targets were set to further reduce emissions and strengthen climate change mitigation strategies. The initiative aims to enhance national efforts in tackling environmental challenges while identifying key areas for improvement.
Minister of Tourism and Environment, Thoriq Ibrahim, highlighted that extensive discussions were conducted in the preparation of the plan. He noted that workshops would continue to be held across the country to assess national and sub-national ambitions and targets. While the Maldives contributes relatively low emissions on a global scale, the newly established goals reflect the country's commitment to environmental sustainability.
The minister also emphasised that the action plan focuses on critical areas essential for national growth. He stressed the importance of international cooperation to increase awareness and support for climate-related initiatives.
As part of the workshop, sessions covered cross-cutting areas vital for the effective implementation of the Climate Action Plan. These discussions included key themes such as finance, technology, climate empowerment, gender, youth engagement, and advocacy for climate education and awareness.
