The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has launched an investigation into illegal sand mining in Shaviyani Farukolhu, with assistance from the Maldives Police Service.
The Shaviyani Atoll Council confirmed the investigation in a statement issued today.
According to the council, the island is safeguarded under the Maldives Environmental Protection Act, which prohibits sand extraction from beaches, thundi, and lagoons. Despite these protections, complaints have been received regarding unauthorised sand mining, including the use of pumps to extract sand from the area.
The council stated that the EPA had informed them about the ongoing investigation, highlighting that sand mining in the region is also restricted under regulations concerning natural and ecological storage sites. The island is protected for multiple reasons, including its natural beauty and ecological significance. Authorities stress the importance of safeguarding such areas for future generations and have urged the public to support conservation efforts.
Residents with information regarding illegal sand mining activities have been encouraged to report details to the EPA. The island is home to diverse wildlife, including protected bird species and marine life, some of which are classified as endangered. The island holds significant environmental value and is subject to special conservation measures.
