More than 100 drug users have been admitted into the national treatment system as part of a special anti-drug operation launched in collaboration with the National Drug Agency (NDA) and the Maldives Police Service.
The initiative, which began in October last year, aims to rehabilitate individuals struggling with drug addiction, particularly those found in vulnerable situations.Over 100 drug users taken off the streets and into rehabilitation
The programme focuses on individuals under drug influence in public areas, including those involved in criminal activities such as theft, as well as those sleeping in mosques and on the streets.
Those identified are brought into the treatment system and provided with medical care, mental health evaluations, and counselling. Authorities say the initiative also helps reduce drug overdoses by ensuring people receive timely intervention and support.
Minister of State for Homeland Security and technology, Lubna Mohamed Zahir Hussain, confirmed that more than 100 people from both Malé and the atolls have been taken in for treatment.
She noted that while efforts initially concentrated on Malé City, the programme has now expanded to other regions. Under the existing policy, courts issue a 30-day remand order for individuals brought in through these operations. Lubna added that those requiring extended care beyond this period are given access to further treatment through residential and community-based programmes.
When the Government took office, more than 700 people had been sentenced to treatment. That number has now been reduced to 150, according to Lubna, who also serves as Chairperson of the NDA. She said the agency is working to accommodate those still awaiting admission, despite limited treatment facilities and judicial capacity. To address this, the NDA board has established a special task force to accelerate the admission process.
Authorities have urged the public to assist in tackling drug abuse by reporting cases to the NDA’s hotline, 1410. Lubna appealed to the community to support efforts to bring drug users into the treatment system, stressing that early intervention is crucial in addressing addiction and preventing further social harm.
The anti-drug operation was launched on October 22 last year by the NDA in coordination with the Maldives Police Service. While no specific end date has been set, the initiative remains ongoing, targeting drug users involved in crimes and those living in vulnerable conditions.
Officials say that taking individuals off the streets and into treatment not only improves their chances of recovery but also reduces the risk of drug-related incidents such as overdoses.
In the Maldives, drug offender remand and treatment centres operate in Himmafushi and Hulhumalé, where those admitted receive rehabilitation services.
Addressing drug abuse remains a top social priority for the Government, with authorities continuing to expand efforts to ensure individuals struggling with addiction receive the necessary support.
