Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim met with Irish Ambassador to the Maldives, Kevin Kelly, to explore ways to strengthen cooperation on climate action and sustainable tourism.

Ireland has long been a strong advocate for small island developing states (SIDS), particularly in addressing the challenges of climate change. As a low-lying island nation, the Maldives remains highly vulnerable to rising sea levels and extreme weather events, making international partnerships crucial in tackling environmental threats.

Tourism, a pillar of the Maldivian economy, was also a central topic of discussion. Ireland’s approach to sustainable tourism development offers valuable insights, particularly in balancing economic growth with environmental conservation. The meeting shed light on the potential for knowledge-sharing and cooperation to strengthen the Maldives' efforts in creating a more resilient and eco-friendly tourism sector.

The Minister expressed optimism about deepening ties with Ireland and working closely with the Ambassador to drive forward joint initiatives.
