President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the new terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA) will be operational by October this year, while delivering the Presidential Address 2025 at the Parliament.

The new 78,000-square-metre facility is designed to significantly enhance the airport’s capacity, increasing its annual passenger handling capability from the current 1.5 million to 7 million, the President noted.

Highlighting the importance of air travel in an island nation like the Maldives, President Dr Muizzu emphasised the Government’s commitment to expanding the country’s air transport network. This initiative aims to address long-standing transportation challenges and support the tourism industry.

In addition to the VIA terminal, the Government is also working to open Hanimaadhoo Airport, Addu Gan Airport, and Meemu Muli Airport this year, with Muli Airport scheduled to open in April.

The President further revealed that several regional airports, including Faafu Nilandhoo, Thaa Guraidhoo, Thaa Villufushi, Alif Alif Mathiveri, Gaafu Dhaalu Kadedhdhoo, Gaafu Alif Vilingili, Baa Kamadhoo, Baa Bilehfahi, Raa Fainu, Haa Alif Dhidhdhoo, Raa Alifushi, Baa Thulhaadhoo, and Laamu Kaddhoo, will be developed in phases throughout the year. Additionally, expansion projects will commence at Haa Dhaalu Kulhudhuffushi and Baa Funadhoo airports.

The new VIA terminal will feature modern aerobridges and an advanced baggage handling system, alleviating the congestion currently experienced at the existing terminal. This development is expected to enhance passenger convenience and support the Maldives’ growing tourism industry.
