President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has set an ambitious target to attract 2.3 million tourists to the Maldives by the end of 2025.
Announcing the goal during his Presidential Address, he highlighted the country’s tourism sector as a key driver of economic growth.
In 2024, the Maldives achieved a historic milestone, welcoming 2 million visitors, marking a 9 per cent increase from the previous year 2023. With this momentum, the President expressed confidence that the target of 2.3 million tourists is within reach.
To achieve this, the Government plans to expand tourism to underdeveloped regions like Haa Dhaalu and Thaa Atolls, where resort construction has yet to begin. By offering investment concessions and incentives, the Government hopes to attract developers and begin construction in these areas this year.
The 2025 budget anticipates 2.2 million tourists and 14.2 million tourism bed nights. As part of its strategy to increase capacity, the national airline, Maldivian, has introduced wide-body aircraft flights to China. An additional wide-body aircraft is expected to join the fleet in October, with plans to expand routes to European destinations.
