Jumhooree Party leader and Maamiligili constituency Parliament Member Qasim Ibrahim has praised President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's Government policies and Presidential Address delivered today, particularly welcoming plans to hold Presidential and Parliamentary elections simultaneously, with the announcement that a bill would be submitted for this purpose.
Speaking to journalists after the Parliamentary session, Qasim, who previously served as both Parliament Speaker and Speaker of the Special Majlis, commended the Government's policies and ongoing efforts to improve the nation's condition.
Simultaneous elections would prevent misuse of state resources, Qasim explained, as the current system allows incoming presidents to exert undue influence through constituency spending in the months leading up to Parliamentary elections.
Qasim lauded President Dr Muizzu's Government's efforts to stabilise the country while criticising the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) for attempting to undermine national interests as the Government works to implement reforms.
He warned that political instability would jeopardise the nation's ability to meet its debt obligations, including sukuk payments and loan repayments due in 2025, emphasising that continued political turbulence would severely impact the country's financial capabilities.
Qasim concluded by strongly criticising the MDP, asserting that the party was responsible for initiating all disruptive and unsavoury political developments in the country.
