Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed has stated that the Maldives Zakat House will become an internationally recognised institution in the future.
Speaking at the Riyaasee Bayaan 2025 forum following President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's Presidential Address, Minister Dr Shaheem explained that zakat is uniquely adaptable among Islamic pillars to changing times and societal needs. He emphasised that all aspects of zakat are designed to improve social conditions.
The Minister highlighted that current zakat distribution primarily focuses on cash assistance and medical treatment support, suggesting that this approach needs modernisation to meet contemporary needs. He proposed expanding zakat's role to include addressing modern social issues and supporting educational initiatives in Islamic studies and other crucial fields for Muslim society.
The Minister expressed confidence that by broadening its scope and enhancing operations, the Zakat House could achieve international recognition while effectively serving its fundamental purpose of eliminating extreme poverty in the Maldives.
