Across the Maldives, preparations are underway for the month of Ramadan. On the northern island of HDh Ihavandhoo, the annual pre-Ramadan bazaar is in full swing, a vibrant tapestry of commerce and community spirit.
This marketplace has become a cornerstone of the island's economic and social fabric, drawing thousands of eager shoppers from across the atolls.
The Ihavandhoo Council anticipates that local businesses will generate approximately MVR 2 million rufiyaa from Saturday's festivities alone. This impressive figure underscores the deep-rooted cultural significance of Ramadan in Maldivian society, where families traditionally embark on weeks of meticulous planning, stocking pantries with essential ingredients for the daily iftar and suhoor meals. This time-honoured practice has given rise to a network of specialised bazaars, transforming islands like Ihavandhoo into bustling hubs of activity.
"Over a thousand individuals journeyed from Kulhudhuffushi yesterday aboard the Sea Queen and Badshah vessels," revealed Mohamed Areeb, the island's Council Vice President, to MMTV.

He emphasised the collaborative nature of this annual event, meticulously orchestrated in conjunction with HDh Kulhudhuffushi and its prominent position on the northern atolls' calendar. The bazaar serves as a microcosm of the broader Maldivian approach to Ramadan preparations, strengthening social bonds and reinforcing shared traditions.
"As a fishing island," Areeb explained, "we boast a rich array of local products, including our renowned rihaakuru (fish paste). Our restaurants and cafés have curated extensive menus to cater to the influx of visitors. Indeed, all businesses are fully equipped and eager to participate in today's vibrant marketplace."

The bazaar's allure extends far beyond Ihavandhoo, attracting visitors from across HA Atoll, including residents of Baarah, Molhadhoo, Marandhoo, Uligamu, and Hoarafushi. Local businesses provided gifts to all visitors, exemplifying the spirit of generosity that characterises the holy month.
Ihavandhoo's competitive pricing structure has solidified its reputation as a premier destination for pre-Ramadan shopping. Areeb noted that the island's advantageous prices, compared to neighbouring islands, have been instrumental in establishing Ihavandhoo as a pivotal commercial centre for the northern atolls.
