Hassan Shakeel, Deputy Director General of the Maldives Marine Research Institute, has passed away at age 64 after serving the organisation for over four decades.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu described his passing as "an irreparable loss to the country's marine research sector," acknowledging Shakeel's unwavering dedication and innovative approach to the field.
The Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources highlighted his instrumental role in reviving ocean species programmes under the old marine research section, an initiative that gained significant momentum under his leadership.
Originally from HDh. Vaikaradhoo, Shakeel began his career at the Marine Research Centre in 1990, where he was deeply committed to nurturing the next generation of marine scientists. Many of the institute's current employees trained under his guidance, benefitting from his vast experience and mentorship as he actively worked to introduce more local researchers into the field.
Beyond his research duties, he taught Fisheries Science at a private school and regularly contributed to public education through radio broadcasts and print media.
In 1999, his dedication to the field was recognised with a National Award of Recognition in the fisheries sector.
Shakeel’s passing marks the end of a distinguished career committed to marine research and institutional growth. His work leaves a lasting impact on the field and those who had the opportunity to work alongside him.
