The Maldives has welcomed over 50,000 tourists in the past week, according to the latest statistics from the Ministry of Tourism and Environment.

Official figures reveal that 55,558 tourists arrived in the globally renowned holiday destination over the past seven days, marking a 5 per cent increase from the 52,511 arrivals recorded during the same period last year.

February has provided a significant boost to the sector, with the country setting a new single-day arrival record on 1 February. On that day alone, 9,495 tourists visited the Maldives, well above the current daily average of 7,000 visitors.

The overall number of arrivals has continued to rise, with 279,916 tourists visiting as of 8 February, reflecting an 11.2 per cent increase from the 251,503 recorded during the same period in 2023.

China has maintained its position as the Maldives’ leading source market this year, with over 50,000 Chinese tourists having already visited. Russia follows closely as the second-largest source market. The majority of visitors —69.7 per cent —chose to stay in resorts, while 25.4 per cent opted for guesthouses, further reinforcing the country’s strong reputation as a luxury travel destination.

The Maldives saw its highest-ever annual tourist arrivals in 2024, marking a historic milestone in its 52-year tourism history. Official statistics confirm that 2,047,435 tourists visited last year, a 9% increase from the 1,878,543 recorded in 2023. This also marks the first time the Maldives has surpassed two million tourist arrivals in a single calendar year, underscoring the country’s growing appeal among international travellers.

Looking ahead, the Government has set ambitious targets to further expand the tourism sector. Authorities aim to increase tourist arrivals by 15 per cent compared to last year and generate USD 5 billion in tourism revenue.
