The Maldivian Government is set to establish a fish packing facility in Hulhumalé to support small and medium enterprises (SMEs) involved in fish exports.

Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, Ahmed Shiyam, announced that the project is scheduled to commence by mid-2025, with completion expected by mid-2026.

Addressing the Parliament in response to a question from Kendhoo MP Mauroof Zakir, Minister Shiyam reaffirmed the Government's commitment to resolving challenges faced by the nation’s yellowfin tuna fishermen.

He discussed ongoing efforts to improve conditions for those working in the fisheries sector, which remains a crucial part of the Maldivian economy.

The Minister also addressed the pricing of yellowfin tuna. He emphasised that establishing a fair minimum price, ranging between MVR 80 and MVR 100, was a pledge made by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. He noted that efforts are already underway to implement the necessary steps to fulfil this commitment, ensuring better earnings for local fishermen.

The Minister further revealed that funding has been allocated for the fish closure facility in Hulhumalé, with an official announcement expected in the next two months. The project, though not large in scale, is expected to provide significant benefits to the industry by facilitating fish exports and stabilising market prices.

Minister Shiyam expressed confidence that the facility would create more opportunities for SMEs while addressing longstanding price fluctuations.
