President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed his Administration’s commitment to advancing gender equality in STEM fields, marking International Day of Women and Girls in Science with a strong message highlighting the role of women in scientific progress.

The President shared a message underscoring the significant contributions of women in science and emphasised the importance of increasing their participation in STEM. He noted that ensuring equal opportunities and support for women in these fields is essential for national development and addressing global challenges such as climate change and sustainable development.

In this regard, the Government has implemented various initiatives to foster gender equality in education and STEM careers. Scholarship programmes, student loan schemes, and first-degree grants have facilitated greater female enrolment in STEM courses. Additionally, the Maldives has achieved the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) in closing the gender gap in educational access.

Beyond higher education, efforts are also underway to expand vocational training opportunities. This includes the establishment of vocational labs and enhanced career guidance programmes aimed at equipping women and girls with industry-specific skills and professional support.

As part of the country’s long-term development strategy, the Administration has set a goal for the digital economy to contribute 15 per cent of the GDP, recognising that women in science and technology will play a crucial role in this transformation.

The President stressed the importance of diversity and inclusivity in driving economic security and innovation, with policies designed to create an environment where women can thrive in these fields.
