Parliament speaker concludes official visit to India

The Speaker of the Maldives Parliament, Abdul Raheem Abdullah, has returned to the Maldives following an official visit to India from February 10 to 14.

The visit was undertaken at the invitation of the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Indian Parliament, and the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Legislature.

During his visit, Speaker Abdul Raheem met with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla at the Indian Parliament. Discussions centred on the role of technology in legislative processes, with Speaker Abdul Raheem noting India's advancements in digital tools and artificial intelligence. He sought India's assistance in modernising and digitising the Maldivian Parliament.

In response, Speaker Om Birla assured technical support and pledged to provide training for Maldivian Members of Parliament and parliamentary staff to enhance their legislative expertise.

Speaker Abdul Raheem also met with the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha and Vice President of India, Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar. Their discussions focused on strengthening parliamentary cooperation between the two countries, as well as fostering closer ties in trade, tourism, and regional stability.

The Speaker was accompanied by a delegation of Maldivian Members of Parliament, including Baarashu MP Ibrahim Shujau, Hulhudhoo MP Mohamed Shahid, and Huraa MP Dr Anara Naeem, along with Kendhikulhudhoo MP Mohamed Afoo Hamid, Kela MP Abdulla Shareef, Henveiru North MP Ahmed Aifan, Kudahuvadhoo MP Hussain Hameed, Gemanafushi MP Asadhulla Shihab, and Kurendhoo MP Mohamed Shamin Habeeb.
