President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has pledged to give focused attention to the needs of thalassaemia patients, placing them at the centre of Government efforts through increased support and stronger involvement in shaping related policies.
He made the remarks during a meeting with members of the thalassaemia community at the President’s Office, where representatives outlined key concerns and called for more inclusive approaches to healthcare planning.
A primary request was for the new Thalassaemia Hospital to be developed in consultation with patients and caregivers, ensuring their ideas and lived experiences are reflected in its design and operation. Participants emphasised the importance of policy-making through direct engagement with those most affected.
The community also called for the Maldives Blood Service (MBS) to be strengthened into a more coordinated, nationwide system. They urged closer collaboration between the MBS and patients, presenting detailed recommendations to support the proposal.
President Dr Muizzu reaffirmed his commitment to involving patients in decision-making and pledged to create pathways for thalassaemia patients to access complete treatment within the Maldives. He acknowledged the concerns raised and assured the community that concrete steps would be taken to address them.
