The 'Maldives 2.0 Digital Transformation Summit' was officially inaugurated on Friday evening by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, marking the beginning of a nationwide push to revolutionise public services and accelerate the country’s transition into a digitally advanced nation.

Held at the Barceló Nasandhura in Henveiru, the summit introduced Maldives 2.0 — a comprehensive digital transformation programme aimed at delivering faster, smarter, and more transparent services across all state institutions over the next three years.

According to the Government, Maldives 2.0 was initiated in response to several persistent challenges. Although digital infrastructure in the country has improved and opportunities are increasing, citizens have not experienced significant enhancements in the delivery of public services. The Maldives continues to rank low in global indices such as the Corruption Perceptions Index, the Transparency Index, and the Digital Governance Index.

Despite the existence of nearly 200 digital service portals, longstanding inefficiencies remain. Many services still require repeated submission of the same information across multiple institutions, and systems continue to operate based on outdated processes established during the paper-based era.

The Government stressed that Maldives 2.0 is not merely a technological upgrade but a reformative initiative involving the joint efforts of all state institutions. The project seeks to re-engineer existing procedures, eliminate corruption, and modernise public administration through the effective use of technology.

Key transformations planned under Maldives 2.0 include:

  • Redesigning services for access with just a few clicks, eliminating both physical and digital queues.
  • Integrating fragmented systems to provide a seamless, unified service experience for citizens.
  • Addressing delays in service delivery by implementing prompt, result-oriented solutions.
  • Replacing opaque bureaucratic procedures with transparent and user-friendly service processes.

The President has positioned Maldives 2.0 as a flagship initiative of his Administration, aiming to bring revolutionary changes that will enhance the lives of citizens and strengthen institutional performance.

The Government reiterated its commitment to achieving tangible results from the programme within the next three years, thereby establishing the Maldives as a digitally empowered and efficient nation.
