Zakat House disburses over MVR 19 million in medical aid

The Zakat House has provided over MVR 19 million in financial assistance for medical treatment during the first four months of the current financial year, according to newly released data.

Hundreds of individuals undergoing treatment for various illnesses have benefitted from this support, with cancer treatment consistently accounting for the largest share of the disbursements.

In January, Zakat funds supported 102 patients. While MVR 1.5 million was allocated for assistance that month, MVR 761,287.50 was actually spent.

Most of the funds went towards:

  • Cancer: MVR 199,303.50
  • Lung diseases: MVR 90,000
  • Heart diseases: MVR 56,007.24
  • Transplants: MVR 405,493.11
  • Kidney diseases: MVR 424,055.50
  • Brain diseases: MVR 16,962
  • Other ailments: MVR 699,737.21

In February, 89 individuals received medical assistance. The Zakat Fund allocated MVR 853,100, of which MVR 759,128 was spent.

Breakdown of spending included:

  • Cancer: MVR 195,063
  • Kidney ailments: MVR 90,592.50
  • Heart diseases: MVR 33,924
  • Transplants: MVR 25,443
  • Brain diseases: MVR 12,721.50
  • Other ailments: MVR 495,356

By March, 68 patients benefitted from Zakat assistance. MVR 2,226,523.01 was allocated, with MVR 847,278.50 spent.

The major areas of spending were:

  • Cancer: MVR 829,042.42
  • Heart diseases: MVR 25,443
  • Kidney diseases: MVR 85,581
  • Lung diseases: MVR 22,157
  • Brain diseases: MVR 278,670.24
  • Other ailments: MVR 985,629.35

April saw the highest number of recipients so far, with 111 people receiving medical aid. MVR 1.7 million was allocated, and MVR 1.1 million was spent.

Medical aid was distributed as follows:

  • Cancer: MVR 301,075.50
  • Kidney ailments: MVR 40,324
  • Heart diseases: MVR 54,240.50
  • Transplants: MVR 50,886
  • Brain Diseases: MVR 506,458.64
  • Other ailments: MVR 772,646.87

In addition to medical aid, Zakat funds were directed towards other welfare programmes during the same period. During the first four months of this year, over MVR 86,000 has been allocated for essential assistance to those in need. Additionally, more than MVR 1.3 million has been disbursed from the Zakat Fund.

Furthermore, over MVR 1.1 million has been spent on supporting Qur’an memorisation and promoting the study of the Qur’an. An additional MVR 1.1 million has also been utilised for various religious programmes.
