Customs has extended its air cargo clearance services to operate on a 24-hour basis. The decision comes in the wake of concerns raised by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) over delays in the clearance process.
The change was announced after a meeting between SMEs and President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, during which business owners highlighted challenges caused by limited operating hours. Customs confirmed that all services related to the clearance of goods arriving by air will now be available around the clock, a move aimed at reducing delays and improving efficiency for traders and importers.
The President noted that the existing clearance process typically took up to 18 hours, as operations were carried out over one or two shifts. In response to feedback from the business community, the operating period was extended to ensure uninterrupted service throughout the day.
Concerns related to demurrage charges were also addressed at the meeting. The President assured SMEs that the current demurrage-free period of 80 hours would be increased to 124 hours, easing the financial burden on traders who had previously incurred high charges due to clearance delays.
He also reaffirmed his commitment to resolving other operational issues affecting businesses at both the airport and seaport, underscoring the Government’s focus on supporting small and medium-sized enterprises and improving trade facilitation.
