President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and the Maldives Police Service (MPS) bear the primary responsibility for safeguarding national freedom and ensuring it is passed on to future generations.

Speaking at a special Independence Day ceremony held to meet with MNDF and police officers, the President highlighted the crucial role of the country’s security forces in maintaining national sovereignty. He noted that the Maldives has a proud and enduring history of independence, crediting the consistent efforts of the MNDF and police in upholding that legacy.

As part of the ceremony, the President presented Presidential Medals, Long Service Medals, and Distinguished Service Medals to MNDF officials. Police officers received Presidential Medals and Distinguished Service Medals in recognition of their service.

The President further noted that members of both forces are often the first to respond during times of national difficulty, standing at the forefront during the country’s most critical moments. He described their service as a daily sacrifice, carried out with dedication and a deep sense of duty towards every citizen.

Underscoring the Government’s commitment to strengthening the nation’s security apparatus, President Dr Muizzu said that one of the Administration’s top priorities is the continued development of the MNDF and police. He affirmed that this commitment has been central to his Government from day one, describing it as both a source of personal pride and a national obligation.

As part of this effort, the President committed to expanding training programmes and creating additional opportunities for officers in both institutions. He reiterated that every effort to support the MNDF and police ultimately contributes to the well-being of the Maldivian people.

This is the first time in the country’s history that a Maldivian Head of State has addressed both the MNDF and MPS together at a joint ceremonial gathering,
