Chief of Defence Force Major General Ibrahim Hilmy has reaffirmed that the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) remains unwavering in its commitment to defending the nation’s independence.

He made these remarks at a ceremony held at the Social Centre on the occasion of Independence Day, where President Dr Mohamed Muizzu met with members of the MNDF and the Maldives Police Service.

Addressing the gathering, Major General Hilmy emphasised that the MNDF remains resolute in its mission to safeguard the country’s sovereignty, as it has throughout history.

Reflecting on the Maldives' long-standing independence, he noted that the nation has sustained more than 4,500 years of uninterrupted freedom—a distinction held by few countries worldwide. He attributed this legacy to the sacrifices of Maldivian ancestors, stressing that the MNDF is committed to continuing that legacy.

Referencing the events of Victory Day on 3 November 1988, he stated that the military demonstrated its unwavering resolve to protect the nation. Even in the face of direct threats, he said, the armed forces did not retreat, adding that their commitment to national defence remains just as strong today.

Major General Hilmy also expressed gratitude to President Dr Muizzu for his efforts to strengthen the MNDF. He said the President’s focus on defence development has played a crucial role in shaping a military force that is better equipped to serve the nation. He added that the strength of the army is directly linked to its ability to protect the freedom and sovereignty of the Maldivian people.

In his remarks, the Chief of Defence Force also extended appreciation to the Maldives Police Service (MPS) for their continued cooperation. Despite being two distinct institutions, he said the police and MNDF have worked closely to uphold the country’s security.
