President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the defence of the Maldives will remain in the hands of Maldivians, affirming that every inch of the nation’s territory would be protected by its own people.

He made these remarks during a meeting with the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and the Maldives Police Service (MPS), held to mark the 60th Independence Day. The President used the occasion to deliver a strong message on national sovereignty and self-reliance.

President Dr Muizzu said that while the Administration’s emphasis on strengthening security forces had prompted questions, he believed that no nation could afford to overlook its own readiness to defend itself. He noted that, despite the Maldives’ relatively small population, the responsibility of defending the country ultimately lies with Maldivians.

He acknowledged the challenges of protecting the country’s vast maritime borders, and underscored the importance of continued cooperation with international partners to access technical expertise and support. However, he made clear that the Government would not allow any foreign country to take the lead in the nation's internal affairs.

The President also paid tribute to those who had contributed to securing the Maldives’ independence, calling on citizens to honour their legacy and remain committed to safeguarding the country’s future.
