Uz Abdul Ghanee Mohamed has been appointed as the new Chief Justice of the Maldives.

The official letter of appointment was presented to the new Chief Justice by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, at a ceremony held at the President’s Office this morning. 

The appointment, made under Article 147 of the Constitution, was followed by the administration of the oath of office by Honourable Supreme Court Justice Uz Abdulla Hameed. Chief Justice Uz Abdul Ghanee then signed the official declaration, formally assuming his new role.

With an extensive academic and judicial background, Chief Justice Uz Abdul Ghanee holds an LLB (Hons.) in Law and Islamic Jurisprudence from Al-Azhar University, a Master’s degree in Islamic Judicial Sciences and Shariah Policy, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching from the Islamic University of Maldives. He is currently pursuing a doctorate in Islamic Judicial Sciences and Legislative Policy.

He most recently served as President of the Tax Appeal Tribunal and has also held academic positions as a lecturer at the Islamic University of Maldives, Villa College, and Zikura College. His judicial career includes service on the benches of both the Supreme Court and the Civil Court, along with a term as Chief Judge of the High Court. He has also been a member of the Judicial Service Commission.

Chief Justice Uz Abdul Ghanee now takes on the highest judicial post in the country, bringing with him a wealth of experience from both the legal and academic spheres.
