MDP members who voted in favour of the new Ministers --

Internal tensions have intensified within the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) after several of its members voted in favour of approving Government ministers during a parliamentary sitting yesterday.

A number of MDP MPs supported the approval of ministers, triggering sharp criticism from within the party and exposing growing divisions between its factions. The vote has led to accusations and personal attacks directed at those members who backed the motion.

Among the MPs who voted in favour were Ahmed Shamheed, Mohamed Ibrahim, Abdul Gafoor Moosa, Mauroof Zakir, Hussain Sameer, Mohamed Nihad, Ahmed Shakir and Ahmed Didi.

Members aligned with the faction of former president Mohamed Nasheed have been particularly critical, accusing those MPs of acting against party principles. Some have alleged undisclosed agreements and financial incentives behind the vote, claims that have not been substantiated.

Ahmed Shamheed and Mohamed Ibrahim have since stated that their decision was a mistake and issued apologies. However, the backlash has continued to intensify, with criticism spreading across social media and political circles.

Saif Fathih, a member of the Malé City Council representing Galolhu, has also weighed in, urging that such justifications should not be presented to constituents.

Former MPs and political activists have joined the criticism, further amplifying pressure on the group. The dispute has also been linked to broader internal disagreements, including differing positions over recent party leadership decisions.

The developments highlight deepening internal rifts within the MDP, as competing factions continue to clash over political strategy and party direction.
