A newly installed public monument in Kaafu Huraa has been vandalised, prompting criticism from local authorities and the launch of a police investigation.
The incident occurred in the early hours of August 6, less than a week after the monument was installed at Huraa harbour. The structure, commissioned by the Huraa Island Council, featured a grey heron and a red crab, symbols associated with the island, which is popularly known as “Crab Island.” Photographs of the damage suggest that the grey heron figure was deliberately struck with a sharp object.
In a statement issued, the Huraa Council strongly condemned the act and confirmed that a formal complaint had been filed with the Maldives Police Service. The council noted that the monument was funded by public finances and intended to promote the island’s identity and tourism appeal.
The council warned that such acts of vandalism hinder local development and risk sowing discord within the community. It further appealed to the public to respect public property and refrain from damaging community assets. The Maldives Police Service has confirmed that the case is under investigation, but no arrests have been made so far.
