President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has committed to delivering fair and balanced development for Baa Kamadhoo, noting that the island’s progress has long been neglected.
President Dr Muizzu made the remarks during a meeting with Kamadhoo residents on Sunday, as part of his ongoing four-day tour of Baa Atoll.
Highlighting current and planned initiatives, the President spoke about the Kamadhoo School expansion project, noting the current shortage of space and facilities. He said a new extension agreement, signed during his visit, will provide more classrooms and improve the learning environment for students.
On boosting economic opportunities, President Dr Muizzu pointed to the planned launch of seaplane services to Kamadhoo under an agreement with Hawks Hotel. He said the service would enhance tourism access and create new business prospects for the island.
Addressing healthcare, President Dr Muizzu underscored the need to expand medical facilities, increase capacity, and extend service hours to 16 hours per day. He announced that the project will be handed over to a contractor in September, with work expected to start before the end of the year.
In the area of sports, the President confirmed that the State Trading Organisation (STO) will supply the turf for a new football stadium, with construction to begin as soon as the materials arrive.
For infrastructure, President Dr Muizzu said road development will focus on proper drainage systems instead of tar or gravel, particularly in islands experiencing growth in local tourism. He assured residents that the harbour development, handed over to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), will be completed in a way that meets community needs. Work to protect eroded areas of the island will also be finalised soon, he added.
He further pledged to allocate funds in next year’s budget for the construction of a new mosque in Kamadhoo and announced plans to develop a nearby picnic island to support local tourism. He also vowed to ensure the island is no longer excluded from the developments and to finish the projects promptly.
