President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to introduce a dedicated policy for infrastructure development in newly reclaimed areas, aimed at ensuring essential services are provided in a structured and consistent manner. The policy, to be included in next year’s national budget, is intended to address nationwide gaps in water, sanitation, and electricity networks.
Addressing the residents of Baa Eydhafushi, the President confirmed that construction of 1,000 housing units on the island will begin this year, with completion targeted before the end of his term. He also pledged to complete harbour development within six months, commence work on an indoor multi-sport complex this year, and upgrade the island’s water and energy networks over the next two years. Additional plans include expanding land for housing plots, introducing a US Dollar ATM service this year, and beginning construction of a convention centre in 2026.
President Dr Muizzu also inaugurated the Raajje Transport Link (RTL) ferry service in Baa Atoll and witnessed the signing of agreements for the development of a Maldives National University campus and a new building for Baa Atoll Hospital earlier today.
In a separate meeting with Island Council, the Women’s Development Committee, and local institution heads, the Council called for the expedited delivery of the sports complex, early connection of water and sewerage services in the newly populated area, measures to attract and retain skilled healthcare professionals, and the construction of a new school building. Other concerns included anticipated pressure on the electricity network, waste management challenges, and expanding participation in the “My Solar” home-solar project.
President Dr Muizzu, accompanied by Cabinet Ministers and heads of State-Owned Enterprises, assured that the Government would review the concerns and work towards practical solutions, emphasising that the projects align with plans for decentralisation and sustainable national development.
