Work has commenced on the construction of a new Waste Management Centre in Alifu Alifu Mathiveri, kicked off by a groundbreaking ceremony attended by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.
The initiative is part of the Government’s efforts to promote environmentally friendly waste management practices nationwide.
The ceremony was officiated by Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim and Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) Chief Executive Officer Ahmed Saudhee. Mathiveri MP Hassan Zareer, Cabinet Ministers, and members of the Mathiveri Council were also in attendance.
The project, awarded to MTCC for MVR 1.06 million, is expected to be completed within six months. It includes the renovation of the existing waste management centre, construction of a hazardous waste storage facility and warehouse, landscaping works, and repairs to the boundary fence.
Home to 1,080 residents and a growing tourism industry, Mathiveri has long called for safer and more effective waste management. The new facility is expected to address these concerns and ensure a cleaner environment for both residents and visitors.
