President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has ratified the Maldives Intellectual Property Office Act, formally paving the way for the creation of a new agency to protect, promote, and oversee intellectual property (IP) rights, in the country.
The Bill, introduced by Kudahuvadhoo MP Hussain Hameed, was passed during the 23rd sitting of the second session of the 20th People’s Majlis on 11 August 2025.
The legislation, which comprises five clauses, mandates the establishment of the Maldives Intellectual Property Office under the ministry responsible for implementation of economic policies. The head of the office will serve as the Registrar of Intellectual Property, with duties, qualifications, and responsibilities clearly defined in the Act.
In addition to registering intellectual property and maintaining official records, the office will be empowered to engage with international IP organisations, participate in global treaties, and monitor regional and international developments. It will also be tasked with conducting public awareness campaigns, providing services under relevant laws, and collecting applicable fees.
According to the Government, the new office is intended to foster innovation and creativity in the commercial sector, contributing to wider economic development. It will also manage the Intellectual Property Register and implement regulations for administrative staff. Following ratification, the Act has been published in the Government Gazette and will come into effect on 1 January 2026.
