A new senior citizens’ park named Onuhiya has been officially inaugurated in Haa Alifu Utheemu as part of this year’s National Day celebrations.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu inaugurated the park during a special ceremony, where he and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed planted two teak trees in honour of Sultan Mohamed Thakurufaanu al-Auzam.
During the same ceremony, Minister of Dhivehi Language, Culture, Heritage and Arts Adam Naseer Ibrahim officiated the groundbreaking of the Bodu Thakurufaanu Monumental Gate, an initiative being developed to commemorate the legacy of Sultan Mohamed Thakurufaanu.
The gate’s design incorporates elements representing the six heroes of Kalhuoffummi, the renewal of Islam, Maldivian culture, and national independence. Inspired by ancient Maldivian mosque pillars, the structure lights up at night to symbolise the enduring service of the six heroes.
The event was attended by senior State officials, including Vice President Uz Hussain Mohamed Latheef, Speaker of Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla, and Chief Justice Uz Abdul Ghanee Mohamed.
