The Government has announced that it will begin awarding the National Engineers' Award from 2026, in recognition of the vital services engineers render to the country.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu made the announcement while addressing the nation to mark National Engineers’ Day, celebrated today for the first time in the Maldives. He began his address by thanking engineers for their past and ongoing contributions across various fields.

The President declared that August 30 will be observed annually as National Engineers’ Day, noting that it coincides with the anniversary of the opening of the Sinamalé Bridge, the largest structural development project in the country’s history. He highlighted that the bridge, inaugurated seven years ago, has significantly improved people’s lives, the economy, and access to social services.

Underscoring the importance of engineers in the nation’s future, the President stressed that their expertise is critical to achieving the Government’s long-term goals: transforming the country into a developed nation by 2040, advancing digitalisation, and moving towards renewable energy.

He also assured that alongside the new national award, the Government will strengthen teaching and training in engineering, while increasing support for scientific research in the field.

Concluding his address, the President paid tribute to the country’s heritage of skilled craftsmanship and praised today’s engineers for their role in sustaining national progress. He extended his prayers for a golden age of prosperity and development led by the engineering community.
