President Dr Mohamed Muizzu met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Tianjin, China, during the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit on 31 August.

The meeting took place while both leaders were attending the high-level gathering at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping, and is part of a series of bilateral engagements President Dr Muizzu is undertaking during his official visit to China.

Following the meeting, PM Modi shared on X that India’s developmental cooperation with the Maldives continues to provide significant benefits to both countries, underscoring the importance of their long-standing partnership.

India and the Maldives share historic ties, with India continuing to be a key partner in areas including infrastructure, health, education, and security. PM Modi noted that under President Dr Muizzu’s leadership, the Maldives has placed special priority on advancing its relationship with India.

The engagement in Tianjin follows PM Modi’s recent visit to Malé, where he attended celebrations marking the 60th anniversary of Maldivian independence at the special invitation of President Dr Muizzu.
