Attorney General Uz Ahmed Usham has said the Government will engage a team of foreign lawyers to pursue efforts to reclaim disputed territory.
Speaking at a press briefing held at the President’s Office on Wednesday, Uz Usham said the current Administration has undertaken extensive work on the issue. He noted that a team of experts from the Maldives and abroad had been tasked with studying the matter, and that their report had been submitted to the Cabinet and discussed.
The Attorney General said that the Cabinet has taken decisions based on the recommendations of the report, and the Government is now in the process of appointing international legal experts and lawyers to proceed with the case. He added that officials from the Attorney General’s Office are already working with foreign legal teams, with further details expected to be announced within two weeks.
The issue relates to a disputed maritime territory, with the Government maintaining that previous legal and diplomatic approaches did not fully reflect the Maldives’ position.
The Administration has pledged to pursue legal avenues to assert the country’s sovereign rights, including actions linked to claims over the Chagos region.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has previously stated that the Maldives will take steps to reclaim the territory and has communicated the country’s position to the United Kingdom regarding sovereignty over Chagos.
