The Maldives Broadcasting Commission (BroadCom) has introduced a new policy on the accreditation of journalists working in the broadcasting sector, published in the Government Gazette.

BroadCom stated that the policy seeks to improve the quality of services provided by the media. It also aims to verify the education, qualifications and experience of journalists, establish an official registry, regulate the issuance of press passes, and make journalist registration mandatory for television stations to obtain broadcasting licences.

According to the Broadcasting Commission (BroadCom), the measure is intended to ensure that professionals in the field have the necessary training to carry out their work responsibly.

Under the new policy, press passes will be granted to editors, reporters, presenters, writers, columnists, photojournalists, photographers, video journalists and videographers. The passes will serve as official accreditation for those working in broadcasting and journalism.

Eligibility requirements stipulate that applicants must hold a Maldives Qualification Authority (MQA) Level 3 certificate in broadcasting and communication or a related field, or have at least three years of experience in journalism. Candidates must also have a clean record with no criminal convictions in the past five years.

In addition, accredited journalists will be required to complete a special training programme organised by BroadCom. The training will cover the broadcasting code of practice, guidelines on the protection of the rights of children and women, reporting on natural disasters and other tragedies, coverage of protests, and the broadcasting of political content during elections. BroadCom indicated that participants will be charged a fee of MVR 100 for the programme.

Applicants who meet the criteria will be issued press passes valid for five years. The registry of accredited journalists will be published on BroadCom’s website, and those holding passes will be required to apply for renewal at least 30 days before the expiry date.
