Tourism Minister Thoriq Ibrahim met with Commissioner General of Taxation Hassan Zareer this week to explore ways to strengthen tax collection in the Maldives’ biggest revenue-generating industry.
During the meeting, the two officials underscored the importance of closer cooperation between the tourism sector and tax authorities, including improved information sharing to ensure timely and accurate payments. They also discussed strategies to enhance compliance and create a more transparent, sustainable framework that supports the continued growth of the industry.
Tourism contributes over a quarter of the nation’s gross domestic product (GDP) and serves as the primary source of foreign currency. Taxes and fees from resorts, guesthouses, and related businesses account for a significant share of Government revenue, funding vital public services and infrastructure.
Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to building an accountable tax system that safeguards State income while fostering a thriving tourism economy.
