The Government has collected over MVR 1.8 billion in green tax as at 6 November 2025, according to the Ministry of Finance and Planning.
Weekly statistics released by the Ministry show an 88 per cent increase in green tax revenue compared to the same period last year. During the corresponding period in 2024, the Government collected MVR 978.3 million.
The green tax was introduced in October 2016 to generate revenue for environmental protection efforts in the Maldives. It is levied on tourist resorts, hotels, guesthouses, and tourist vessels.
The Finance Ministry’s figures align with the rise in tourist arrivals. As of 18 November, the Maldives recorded 1.94 million tourist arrivals, reflecting a 9.9 per cent increase compared to last year. The growth in arrivals has directly contributed to the higher green tax revenue.
The tax is charged at USD 12 per person per night for tourists staying at resorts, hotels, and liveaboards, and USD 6 per person per night for those staying in guesthouses.
