Maldivian’s first wide-body aircraft has transported more than 46,000 passengers since entering service earlier this year, according to new figures released by Island Aviation on X.
The Airbus A330-200, with a seating capacity of 264 passengers, joined the national carrier’s fleet in January as part of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s commitment to expanding international air travel. The aircraft operated its inaugural flight on 22 January, flying to Chengdu, China.
Since its introduction, the wide-body aircraft has completed 140 flights across three countries. This includes 117 flights to three destinations in China, 14 flights to Saudi Arabia, and nine flights to India.
In addition to passenger services, the aircraft has also been used for cargo operations, transporting more than 1.15 million kilogrammes of freight to various destinations.
Island Aviation confirmed that preparations are underway to add a second wide-body aircraft to the fleet next year. The company is currently assessing new long-haul markets, with potential routes under study including South Korea and South Africa.
